The collaboration originated from Schaller’s longstanding admiration for Artisan & Artist camera straps. During his visit to Japan, Schaller visited Artisan & Artist, where the idea for this unique collaboration emerged naturally—combining Schaller’s distinct artistic vision with our craftsmanship. After an extended development period, this exclusive edition will be available in December 2024, with a limited production of 500 pieces, available only on the official online store.
The Fusion of Alan Schaller’s Art and a Silk Cord Camera Strap
Alan Schaller is a London-based photographer, celebrated for his focus on monochrome photography, pursuing a unique aesthetic through his black-and-white works. His art is characterized by surrealism, geometric compositions, and bold contrasts, earning him global acclaim. Schaller’s approach to composition revolves around light and its effects, creating intellectually refined visual expressions. As a Leica Ambassador, his work has been featured in major media outlets such as The Guardian and The New York Times, establishing him as a prominent photographer. To reflect Schaller's unique visual style, we based this collaboration on Artisan & Artist’s flagship ACAM-320A silk cord strap, adding a special design inspired by his artistic motifs.
White & Black Design with 'Kuro Kasuri' Pattern
This camera strap is crafted in a White & Black design, inspired by the aesthetics of Schaller’s black-and-white photography. Utilizing the traditional silk braiding technique known as Yurugi-gumi, and featuring a 'kuro kasuri' pattern with a unique design on each side, the strap captures the visual dynamism of Schaller’s art. The front side of the strap showcases a 35mm film perforation pattern, while the reverse side reflects geometric patterns seen in his works. These refined details embody the sophistication of Schaller’s art. Additionally, the leather back of the strap bears a gold-embossed logo, reading “ALAN SCHALLER 1st EDITION,” symbolizing this inaugural collaboration.
Flat-Type Silk Cord Strap
Crafted with high-quality silk cord braided traditionally as a popular material in Japanese attire, this silk strap boasts the soft texture and beautiful luster unique to silk. Meticulously woven by skilled artisans at a long-established braiding workshop in Kyoto, it combines durability with a gentle touch against the skin. Using the traditional yurugi-gumi (crown) braiding technique, this strap resists twisting, reduces strain on the neck, and provides comfort even during prolonged use. Additionally, thanks to silk’s inherent flexibility, it can be wrapped around the hand or knotted to adjust its length as needed.
Special Packaging with Photograph of Mt. Fuji
To commemorate this collaboration, each strap comes with a photograph of Mt. Fuji, captured by Schaller from above. Printed on premium textured paper with subtle ridges, the photo accentuates the delicate and sophisticated shadows of Schaller’s work. Each print includes his signature stamp, enhancing its value as a collector’s item.
